Where you live in the city can actually make a difference in amount you'll spend each week on the necessities. Fifty cents for eggs here, and a dollar for yogurt there may not seem like much, but when you're buying groceries every week, it can all add up.
For example, I compared prices between the Dunbar area (the IGA on 41st and Dunbar) with the Main and Broadway area (Buy Low Foods).
It confirmed my theory, for the most part, that the price of groceries corresponds with the cost of the housing in the area. But for those not factoring in the markups, it can be another cost to consider.
Finally, one thing to keep in mind before moving is the nearby markets. The West End has fantastic little grocers for organic food - same with Main Street and Commercial, at reasonable prices. Look for farmer's markets and community gardens too.
